The New Museum of European and Mediterranean civilisations in Marseille

The New Museum of European and Mediterranean civilisations in Marseille, France.

Can you introduce yourself ?
Françoise Bekus, Studies Engineer, Manager of the Micromusée database presents the project:

Can you make a brief description of your project ?
The project of moving from Paris the collections of the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, to create the Museum of European and Mediterranean civilisations in Marseille, involves the implementation of different tasks in collection management.

This transfer gives the opportunity of a reflexion and reorganization work for the scientific staff before their departures for the whole collection.
The actual database consists of:

  1. partial inventory 3D Collections from the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions (180.000 records out of a total of 350.000),
  2. Inventory of the Europe Collection from the Musée de l’Homme (30.000 objects, deposit in 2005)

From the existing database Micromusée, specific profiles were established for each position in the work chain:

  • Audit and condition control
  • Electronic marking with bar code
  • Measures and weight of objects
  • Dust removal and small restoration
  • Shooting
  • Fill up boxes
  • Storage before removal

How did you handle the online project ?
Eleven people are assigned to these tasks.

Micromusée Inventory plus the movement and electronic marking module allow to improve the quality of information and to follow the progression of the object through the different steps. It is also an opportunity to document the objects by attaching documentation and restoration files to Micromusée records.

What do you think about Mobydoc partnership?
Since 1990, Micromusée is used to manage the Inventory in our institution. The richness of its functionalities was of a great help in this removal project, to apply procedures and resolve difficulties, helping us to follow and manage the project in its entirety.
