NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SPORT

Online project at the National Museum of Sport.

Can you introduce yourself ?
Patrick Porte, Executive Heritage Curator, executive director of the National Museum of Sport. With the label of “Musée de France”, the Museum of Sport is the only national institution devoted to the study, the conservation and the development of sport heritage and memory of sport.

Can you make a brief description of your museum ?
More than 100.000 objects constitute the national collections of Sport. Dating from the sixteenth century and especially from the nineteenth century to the present day, the collections include both sport equipments, often used or worn by the greatest champions, than merchandised products or art works (paintings, sculptures) relative to sport.

Do you have specific projects at the moment and how the online project is part of it ?
The museum is actively working on its removal and to move into new sites for both exhibitions and a new conservation centre. During this period of transfer where exhibitions will not be visible, it seemed important to allow access to researchers through the website after a complete update.

How did you handle the online project ?
First we applied a new design on our website, and hosted it externally. Then we wanted to publish our Micromusée database online, rich of 75.000 records including 10.000 images. Using the OPACWeb allowed us to select efficient search criteria for the public: simple search, crossed search and free text search. This project has been done internally by 2 people: a documentation officer from the collections service and a scientific coordinator.

What do you think about Mobydoc partnership?
The museum has no internal IT service. Online training and consultancy services from Mobydoc have helped to make this project a reality within a few months, while retaining control on the development and having a necessary and effective help.

A word to finish ?
Beyond exhibitions, Internet must show to our different audiences the maximum of our collections in a simple way. The OPACWeb answer to this problematic by enhancing the rich content of Micromusée.
